NEUROCOGNITIVE DISORDERS
MAJOR NEUROCOGNITIVE DISORDER (DEMENTIA)
"Dementia" was changed to "Major Neurocogntive Disorder" when DSM 5 was introduced.
There are many different types or causes of Dementia. Alzheimer's disease is just one type of it.
Vascular disease (strokes) accounts for more cases of Dementia in our country.
Dementia is not only associated with memory and behavioral problems. Other domains of functioning have to be assessed which includes attention, language, motor, learning and social awareness.
Each of these different areas of functioning would have to be evaluated to determine the degree of cognitive decline.
There are also reversible forms of Dementia which if detected and treated sooner can prevent complications.
DELIRIUM
Is a condition that develops due to an underlying medical condition or withdrawal from a substance (e.g. Alcohol Withdrawal)
It has a sudden onset, fluctuates during the course of the day, and is associated with impairment in attention and cognition (disorientation, memory deficits etc.)
